The City of Cornwall has retained a structural engineering firm to undertake an assessment of the culvert at the intersection of Cumberland Street and Emma Avenue following the flooding and washout earlier this month.
The engineering firm has examined the situation on site and confirmed that the culvert needs to be replaced.
To that end, the City’s Engineering and Municipal Works team is finalizing design plans to replace the culvert. The work is expected to carry into the mid-summer period.
At the same time, staff and the engineering firm have reviewed preliminary options for reopening the roadway to traffic in the short term. A temporary structural cover is being explored with a goal of accommodating cars, light trucks and Cornwall Transit buses (but not large trucks) while the work is completed to replace the culvert.
It’s anticipated this arrangement will be finalized in the coming weeks and additional details will be provided once the plans are finalized.
The City of Cornwall would like to once again thank motorists and residents for their patience and cooperation in following the detours in place.
