UPDATE: One Akwesasne snowmobiler dead, other still focus of search

CORNWALL, Ontario – One snowmobiler from Akwesasne is dead and a search continues for another by rescue officials from the United States and Canada.

The Plattsburgh Press-Republican confirmed the death of one snowmobiler, whose body was recovered Sunday night from the Salmon River.

His machine plunged through the ice on the river.

Initial reports did not confirm the status of the recovered individual.

Both men are apparently residents of Akwesasne, but it is unclear if they are from the U.S. or Canadian portion of the reserve.

The search began Sunday afternoon off Hopkins Point Road, which is off Drum Street Road and leads over the Canadian border into Quebec.

A Quebec police dive team is expected to take part in the search effort.
