CORNWALL, Ontario – A tractor-trailer driver from Quebec has been killed in an accident on Highway 401 Thursday night.

OPP Const. Joel Doiron confirmed the news, saying a 59-year-old male driver from Quebec was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Two eastbound tractor-trailers collided west of the Boundary Road exit just before 9 p.m.

The accident on Highway 401 is seeing eastbound traffic rerouted through the city, leading to lineups on some streets.

What led to the accident is unclear at this time.

Traffic is being shunted off the highway at the McConnell Avenue exit, creating headaches for some motorists.

“Cops with flares are blocking people from going on the eastbound” lanes, said one witness who spoke with Seaway News. “Traffic going south on McConnell to Marleau is non-stop trucks.”

It is not known how long it will take to see the closed 401 lanes reopened to traffic.

OPP accident investigators are at the scene.
