CORNWALL, Ontario – The 43 annual United Counties Science Fair started early Saturday, April 7, 2018 bringing more than 40 professionals to judge the projects that were displayed within the gymnasium of the St. Lawrence Secondary School.

The UCSF is part of larger science fair that has 25 000 students across Canada competing for prizes and a chance to move on to Ottawa for the Canada Wide Science Fair.

Jason Marshall organized the fair at the St. Lawrence Secondary School.

“They find something that they are passionate about and pursue it,” said Marshall.

Projects are picked by the students and can be on whatever subject their heart desires.

This year the fair had over 60 projects with subjects ranging from bacteria in school to magnetic levitation.

“We wanted to know how much bacteria is in our school and how clean it actually is, so we used this as our project,” said Lauren McDougall who participated in the fair with Rachel Ferguson.

The science fair this weekend was a gathering of students from schools within the SD&G counties.

“It’s the idea that a science fair project is so interdisciplinary. Kids have to think scientifically, linguistically, and mathematically. And then they get to meet like-minded people.” explained Marshall.

The fair held projects from grades 6 to 12 with most competitors being in grade 6.
