UPDATE: Ship runs aground near Cornwall, Seaway traffic resumes

CORNWALL, Ontario – A ship ran aground near Cornwall following an electrical problem aboard the vessel, snarling traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway for a time.

As of Sunday night traffic on the Seaway was closed while efforts were made to refloat the Algoma Spirit, that went aground just east of the city.

Commercial traffic was halted on the river after the incident, which occurred Saturday afternoon.

Traffic resumed Monday.

“The vessel is being inspected by lead agency Transport Canada along with Canadian and U.S. Seaway inspectors participating in the investigation to ensure a safe and effective resumption of navigation,” according to a statement Sunday night from the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation’s Lori Curran, who is director of lock operations.

There were no injuries and the vessel isn’t leaking anything into the river.
