CORNWALL, Ontario – A CN freight train was stopped on tracks east of Cornwall, blocking access to a neighbourhood in South Glengarry for several hours Thursday.

A resident called Seaway News  to advise the train had been stopped since 9 a.m. and hadn’t moved an inch.

By midafternoon it had finally left.

But before that the witness, who lives at the north end of Purcell Road, said there was no access to his neighbourhood with the train blocking the street.

“What happens if an ambulance wants to get up here? Or someone wants to get out?” he said, with the incessant sound of the bells at the crossing clanging in the background.

Neighbours had begun to congregate at the crossing, demanding answers.

CN Rail spokesperson Lindsay Fedchyshyn said a “knuckle” that is used to connect rail cars on the train had developed a problem and needs immediate repair.

“We really understand the inconvenience,” she said.
