CORNWALL, Ontario – Police now say three people died in a terrible collision on Highway 401 that actually saw one vehicle travelling the wrong way in the westbound lanes.

Police said an SUV, driven by Jonathan Cawthron, 28, of Nova Scotia, was travelling  eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Lancaster when it collided head-on with a westbound Hyundai driven by an adult male police said was 31.

The SUV then struck a tractor-trailer.

Cawthron was killed at the scene, as was a passenger in the Hyundai, Akansksha Jain, 27, of Kingston.

The accident occurred around 8 p.m. Sunday. Later Sunday night another of the passengers in the Hyundai, Sharad Srivastava, 58, of East India, succumbed to her injuries overnight while in hospital.

The male driver, 31, of the Hyundia, his mother, 58, and his three-year-old son were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The 53-year-old male driver of the tractor-trailer, from Saint-Lazare, Que., was not injured.

A section of Highway 401 was closed to traffic, but has since been re-opened.
