CORNWALL, Ontario – A popular wintertime event in Lamoureux Park appears to have been frozen out this year.

A couple of board members with Winterfest, who spoke with Seaway News Thursday night, confirmed the multi-day festival that also took place within the Cornwall Civic Complex has been cancelled for 2015.

There have been no organizational meetings convened for any kind of event this year, said one of the board members who did not wish to be identified.

Jason Mitchell, chair of the event, said Winterfest is making plans for a “bigger” event in 2016.

“There is a bigger picture in place for a 2016 Winterfest Extravaganza but many things have to be accomplished from now (until) then,” he said. “Even if it means a one-year hiatus on our community’s signature winter festival.”

Mitchell said the event has grown considerably in the last five years.

“I could testify as to the ongoing problems we have encountered year after year and the struggles we have had to surpass to continue to deliver a signature product that our community deserves,” he said. “In the last five years, our free admission festival has grown to attracting over 30,000 yearly and has offered hundreds of activities highlighted by three nights of Fireworks in 2013.

“To keep up to the growth and try to deliver the same free excitement every year, unfortunately, sometimes you have to take a step back to move two steps forward – which is the case as we move towards 2016.”

Mitchell said more information would be released soon.
