The cargo vessel the Whitefish Bay ran aground off of the coast of Hamilton Island two minutes before 6 p.m. on the evening of July 12.

Jean Aubry-Morin, Vice President of External Affairs with the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation said that that White Fish Bay was being operated by Canada Steamship Lines and was carrying a cargo of coal bitumen products to Beldune, New Brunswick.

Morin said that no cargo had escaped the vessel and polluted the seaway and that no souls on board were injured when the ship ran aground.

The accident happened when the ship experienced a blackout.

Morin said that after some emergency manouvers the vessel came to rest on the south coast of the seaway by Hamilton Island.

The ship was still stuck by midday on July 13. Morin explained that a salvage plan had to be formed and approved by the Coast Guard and that he did not expect the vessel to move until the next day at the earliest.
