CORNWALL, Ontario – Heaven Carbonnell never imagined she would own her own spa at the age of 21.
Carbonnell, who graduated from the Esthetician program at St. Lawrence College (SLC) in Kingston, worked locally at Oasis Hair & Day Spa upon graduation. After a year and a half, she decided to venture to Banff, AB to work at Moose Hotel & Suites spa. Unsure of what to do next, she returned to the city to study Pre-Health at SLC.
“My mom and my dad were like, ‘you should do mobile (spa) services and go to people’s homes,’” she said.
Carbonnell decided to follow through with her parent’s suggestion and began the setup process of Aspen Spa. The spa, located on 527 Pitt St., opened on July 4.
“There are a lot of spas in Cornwall, so I wanted to do something a bit different from what everyone else is doing,” said Carbonnell. “So I decided on mobile, and to still have a place for people to go to. So, I do both, which is really fun.”
Specializing in nails, waxing, tinting, oncology esthetics and soon eyelash lifts, Carbonnell’s work has taken her into hospitals, community member’s homes, bachelorette parties and children’s birthday parties.
Carbonnell enjoys the social aspect of her work and said that she may be the only person a senior citizen client will see in a day. Almost complete with her oncology esthetics training, Carbonnell is happy to offer services to individuals who may have underwent chemotherapy or other methods of cancer treatment.
“They’re going through so much, so to be able to give them something that calms them down, they love that. Its been really nice,” she said.
Renovating her spa space, which was once a tattoo parlor, took a few months and more than a few coats of paint. With the support of family and friends, the spa was transformed. Carbonnell is thankful for the support she has received so far and is continuing to inform the community about her services on social media.
