CORNWALL, Ontario – Tonight is the night, folks. The night Cornwall has been waiting almost nine years for.
By 8 p.m. tonight, nearly 3,000 people are expected to pour into the Civic Complex to see the boxing match they’ve been anxiously awaiting since Cornwall boxer, Tony Luis gained professional status. In a fight that has recently been deemed ‘pivotal,’ Luis (22-3 7KO) will be taking on Sinaloa, Mexico’s Noe Nuñez (17-4-1 13 KO).
“I came here well prepared. I know Tony Luis is a tough opponent, but I’m not afraid of him,” said Nuñez.
His nickname, ‘El Dengue’ – a reference to the dengue fly which has a sting that can kill you.
“I think that’s what he’s looking to do during the fight,” said Liveco Boxing Matchmaker, Zac Pomilio.
Ronnie ‘Rocket’ Robidoux (2-0 2KO) is another local fighter on the card this evening.
“It’s my hometown, too, so I’m very excited to show everybody what I’m capable of,” said Robidoux.
The Akwesasne native has been described as ‘relentless,’ and will face Mexico’s experienced fighter, Jesus Ortega (2-3-1), who is coming off a loss and a draw, both in Ontario.
“I took a loss but I’m back – the style of my opponents suits me, and I’m here to win,” said Ortega.
Luis says he feels confident in his preparation for the fight, having made all the necessary sacrifices.
“I know my opponent’s coming to win. I know he’s worked very hard – I can tell just by looking at him; he’s lean and he’s chiselled, and he didn’t come here to lay down,” said Luis. “Neither did I. Fate will take care of the rest, it’s as simple as that.”
Luis says he’s grateful and overwhelmed by the community’s outpouring of support in the months leading up to the fight.
“I intend to not let them down, and to make good on my promise that Cornwall will be host to boxing again in the near future,” said Luis.
While this fight may be the jumping-off point for Cornwall’s own Tony Luis, he says that right now, he only has one name in mind.
“I don’t want to even think about any names in the future, because the only name I’m thinking about right now is Noe Nunez. Until I take care of that, there are no other names to discuss.”
The fight is set to take place this evening at the Civic Complex starting at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
