POLICE VS. FIRE: Slo-pitch players hit the field to benefit woman battling cancer

CORNWALL, Ontario – Police and firefighters will be lining up on opposing sides of the softball field this weekend.

On Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Reg Campbell Diamond 2 the Cornwall Police Schnitzel’s Melonheads 2 will square off against the Fiddler’s Cornwall Firefighters in a contest that is no ordinary game.

The contest will act as a fundraiser for Christina Archambault and her two sons. Archambault, at just age 29, is battling breast cancer for the second time in her life.

“This (game) will be a challenge, a challenge to come together as a community and raise some much-needed funds,” said Cornwall police Sgt. Dave Maclean. “Both teams thought it would be a great opportunity to make an event of their match-up in league play and invite the community to come out and cheer.”

Hot dogs, soft drinks and chips will be sold to raise funds, and goodwill donations will also be accepted.

A barbecue is also being held Thursday at 4210 County Road 14 in Ingleside to benefit Archambault.

The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and is likewise acting as a fundraiser.

Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, a dessert, salad, chips or soft drinks to share.

An online fundraising account has been set up for Archambault. It can be accessed here.
