Racial slurs from Cornwall fans aimed at referee: CBC report

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall girls hockey team and the league it plays in is investigating after racial slurs were hurled at a referee, CBC is reporting.

The national news agency said the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association is trying to get to the bottom of what happened at a Saturday night game between the Cornwall Typhoons and Ottawa Ice in the nation’s capital.

Sources told CBC News some parents yelled racial slurs and insults, including “Go home, Mohammed,” at a referee on the ice.

CBC also suggested, via its own sources, the comments were coming from the Cornwall section of the crowd, who were in attendance for the peewee B game.

Rod McLeod, president of the Cornwall Girls Hockey Association, was not immediately available for comment.

CBC added Cornwall parents obliged after the referee told all of them to leave the rink or he would end the game.

More to come.
