The annual Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge took place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the east parking lot of the Cornwall CivicComplex. Known for its 3-on-3 format and no goalies, the ball hockey event featured four gamepads set up with chain-link fencing.

This year’s location, between the marina and Aquatic Centre, marked a shift from the previous years on Montreal Road. Staff Sgt. RobinMcIntosh, a co-founder of the event, praised the change. “We don’t have to close roads early in the morning, and there’s plenty of parking. It’s a great location for everyone,” he explained.

The free-to-enter tournament, supported by corporate and community donors, attracted 14 teams with about 45 children participating. Onestandout moment came when 13-year-old Leighton Teal scored the opening goal against the Cornwall Police team. The game briefly paused for a celebratory photo, but much to Leighton’s surprise, she received a pie to the face. Her second goal prompted more antics as officers jokingly handcuffed one of her teammates to the fence in a lighthearted attempt to gain an advantage.

Ashley Sanderson, Leighton’s mom, enjoyed the playful exchange. “It’s great, it’s super fun seeing the police out having fun with the kids. I was so happy she scored the first goal, and her getting a pie was priceless—we even took a video of it,” she said.

Staff Sgt. McIntosh highlighted the event’s broader impact. “A lot of these kids don’t play organized hockey, so this is their one opportunity to be part of something big. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes it all worth it,” he stated.

Since its start in 2013, Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge has become a cherished tradition in Cornwall, blending hockey fun with the holidayspirit and creating lasting memories for participants and spectators alike.
