CORNWALL, Ontario – The 22nd annual Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic will be sweeping through the city from Sept. 12 to 16.

The World Curling Tour, presented by World Financial Group, will host 42 of the top curling teams from across the globe, including Olympic gold medalists from the U.S.A. and Canada.

“It’s by far the biggest international event we have on a regular basis in Cornwall,” said John Dilabio, Co-Chair of the tournament.

Matt Camm of Cornwall will be amongst the notable athletes in attendance, playing for John Epping’s revamped squad. According to Dilabio, Camm is ranked eighth in the world.

“We have a strong field of players, which is really good considering it’s the year after the Olympics,” said Dilabio.

Dilabio explained that this year the tournament increased the ladies’ fields from 15 to 18 teams. A livestream of all games played on one of the sheets will be broadcasted online for the first time ever. The tournament will also receive more coverage on television.

“We haven’t had that ability in the past few years,” said Dilabio. Despite this, the official event website received 42,000 hits last year.

A prize lot of $92,000 will be up for grabs throughout the tournament, making the event the largest prize money opportunity outside of grand slam events. Dilabio said that the event and its success wouldn’t be possible without the generous sponsorship, support from partners and the media.

“We are limited in space but we get very good crowds,” said Dilabio. “We get people from all over Ontario.”
