CORNWALL, Ontario – Char-Lan Skating Club members are sharpening their skates in anticipation of the 2014-15 season.
As part of the Skate Canada program, the Williamstown-based club caters to people of all ages in their CanSkate classes.
They teach figure skating through their STARSkate program, and provide lessons for those who have not skated before through their pre-CanSkate program.
“This season marks the official launch of Skate Canada’s new and improved CanSkate program,” said Lisa Van De Ligt, CanSkate coordinator.
Registration for CanSkate, STARSkate (figure skating), and hockey conditioning programs is on September 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre.
The new program is for all ages and promotes more movement around the entire ice surface through games and fun circuits.
“The skaters especially like the new Fast Track where they are free to skate as fast as they can,” added Van De Ligt.
Each program has a limited capacity, so parents are encouraged to register early.
While at the in-person registration on September 10, parents can also meet the club’s coaches and assistants, learn about the different parts of the programs such as awards and session formats, and also get the answers to any questions they have.
Parents will also be able to purchase used equipment such as skates and skating dresses.
“We’re seeing our CanSkaters develop strong skating skills much quicker than we’ve ever seen before,” said Christina Martin, club president.
The club skates in Williamstown at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre from the end of September to mid-March on Mondays, Wednesday, and Thursdays.
The annual fees are: Pre-CanSkate $110, CanSkate $265, STARSkate $330, and Hockey Conditioning $220.
“The new program is fantastic and I encourage all parents to consider it for their children, whether it be to gain skating skills for hockey, figure skating, or simply recreational skating,” said Martin.
