Art gallery dismisses Lizotte, searches for economical replacement

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Art Gallery – Cornwall and its executive director have parted ways, confirms the organization’s president.

Wyatt Walsh said Tuesday Sylvie Lizotte, TAG’s long-time leader with more than 20 years at the helm, was dismissed a few weeks ago.

She had been on leave at the time while Walsh complete an internal investigation into the inner workings of TAG.

“This was a cut and dry situation,” Walsh said in an interview. “We did our due prudence.”

Who will replace Lizotte, who had been at odds with previous members of the TAG board, becomes the new focus for the agency that is grappling with a significant funding cut from city hall.

“We’ve started to collect applications,” said Walsh. “But we’re not sure how we’re going to fill (the position).”

When asked if the job might be handled part-time Walsh suggested “anything is possible” and added the role could be filled on a volunteer basis as well.

“We need someone who is familiar with the arts, but also knows about office management,” he said.

City hall cut TAG’s funding to just $13,500 this year, form the $70,000 it requested.
