CORNWALL, Ontario – With the Blazers’ season just around the corner, team coaches recently banded together in support of a new initiative.
This Sunday, March 26, the Benson Centre hosted the first ever Blazers Kick for Charity Soccer Tournament. Coach of the U15 Girls team, Angela Aubin says that it’s a great kick start event to open the season.
The Blazer’s season is starting officially in the next couple of weeks, so we thought this would be a good way to kick off the season,” said Aubin. “It’s also a great opportunity to get the kids to work together and get to know one another and not just be stuck with the same team.”
Coaches presented various charities to the kids, and from there, teams narrowed down their options. From there, teams would face off in support of their charity, with all proceeds being donated to the winning team’s charity. Among those selected were the Children’s Treatment Centre, Beyond 21, the Canadian Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall and SDG, and Rachel’s Kids.
While only one charity will benefit from proceeds, five will receive increased awareness through the event.
“This the first time we’ve had this event, but it already looks like we’ll be repeating it in the fall at the end of our season, and hopefully again in the spring,” said Aubin. “It shows the kids that they can give back to the community while still having fun and getting practise time in.”
While the spirit of competition was alive and well at the event, Aubin says that the overarching theme has been enjoyment. “The teams are all evenly matched and divvied up,” said Aubin. “It’s not really that ‘win-at-all-costs’ kind of feel – so far, it’s been very amicable and fun.”
