SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – For Dad’s big day on Sunday, June 17, Cornwall Aviation and Cornwall Flying Club hosted the 42nd annual Father’s Day Fly-in Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon.
This year, the Canadian Coast Guard made an appearance, and pilot Gary Ertel invited everyone to take photos with the air craft. Event tickets were $8 for adults and $5 for children. Fergie Legge, the event organizer with the Cornwall Flying Club, said that last year volunteers served over 750 meals. This year, they’re expecting a higher number.
“It’s a huge effort, obviously, we do it with our own club members — 25 came out today to participate,” said Legge. “But more importantly the Lancaster Air Cadets, Cornwall Air Cadets and Alexandria Air Cadets all lend a hand to get this event off the ground. At the end of the day, a lot of the money that we raise goes back to Cornwall Aviation, and it goes into a special account that allows the Air Cadets to go flying.”
Cornwall Aviation was offering plane rides for $20. There was also live karaoke and a DJ, as well as face painting.
“Every year we try to up the game a little bit. Last year we started face painting and it was really well received, so we have it again this year,” said Legge.
Legge hopes that this year’s event informed community members about the local airport and sparked an interest in aviation amongst children.
