CORNWALL, Ontario – The dozens came down to Lamoureux Park on Monday, Sept. 3 to celebrate Labour Day with the Labour Council Picnic.
Louise Lanctot of the Cornwall Labour Council said that this picnic has been happening every year for as long as she could remember.
This year saw bouncy castles, a mini-train, live entertainment, face painting and free food.
“Today is a day for workers to come and enjoy themselves,” said Lanctot.
She explained that there was still an important place for Labour Day in modern Canada.
“I think it is more important than ever,” she said. “Labour is the protector of the social condition in Canada. Labour cares about the environment, equity and those who are less fortunate. Unions are more important now than ever before.”
Labctot explained that Labour was also pushing for a nationally administered pharmacare program. She also said that in the coming week, the Labour Council would be sending recommendations to its members on different candidates running in this year’s municipal election in Cornwall.
