CORNWALL, Ontario – Students of the TR Leger Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Hospitality and Tourism showcased their best chili dishes for a panel of judges on Thursday, Dec. 6.

“Today was an excellent example of the great things that happen at TR Leger each and every day,” said Trent Carter-Edwards, Vice Principal, who was very proud of everyone involved. “This event was the culmination of the hard work and dedication of our staff and SHSM students.”

Four teams of students each prepared a chili dish, which included one vegetarian dish, a sweet peanut butter dish, a dish with bacon and a classic dish. Students served judges in the gymnasium, which was elaborately decorated for the holidays.

“This is my first time making chili,” said Ashley Gagne-Paqette, a SHSM student, who had fun making her dish. “I have a lot of experience at home cooking so I kind of just used instincts and experience. I’ve only had family and friends try my food for the most part, so it will be interesting to have an outsider try it.”

The team voted to have the best chili included Kurtis Cote, Brandon Hill and Brandon Murray. Tied for second were the teams of Bethanie Langabeer and Abby Nyman, and Ashley Gagne-Paquette and Cy Dumond. In third place was the team comprised of Sara Brown and Kailyn Camasso. Judges included CCPS Cst. Andrew Arbic, Mel Sommerville of Laurencrest Youth Services, local chef Matt Drouin, Jill Stewart of HEBL, UCDSB officials including Superintendent Tim Mills and Rene Bourget of TR Leger.

“It is exciting for them and this is an excellent opportunity,” said Tammy Cooper, instructional assistant and organizer of the Cook-Off. Cooper said it was a student who recommended a chili competition. Cooper said the planning and decorating for the Cook-Off had been in the works for about three weeks and fell at a perfect, festive time for students and staff.
