Getting rid of your garbage is a lot easier than you might think

It’s an ongoing issue that plagues the City of Cornwall every year, regardless of the season. It happens in newer neighbourhoods and older ones too, in the West end just like in the East end.

I’m of course talking about bulky items — like couches, TVs, tables or mattresses, among many other things — being thrown at the curb. Believe it or not, the hard-working men and women that collect your garbage and recyclables every week won’t pick up that 150-pound couch for you.

For starters, it probably wouldn’t fit in their truck. Second, it’s also a safety hazard — no one wants to pull their back out when swinging an old and dusty couch in the back of a garbage truck when there’s snow and ice everywhere.

So, what exactly do you do if you buy your baby a new crib and need to dispose of the old one? Well, it’s simple — simply use the City of Cornwall’s Bulky Item Collection Service.

For a minimal fee, the City of Cornwall will come to your driveway and pick up your bulky item for you every first Wednesday of the month. Your item will then be brought to the City’s landfill and disposed of properly.

By using the service, you won’t have to borrow that old pick-up truck from your friend, put some gas in it and then drive all the way to the landfill to then pay a tipping fee. Now that’s what I call convenient!

You can find the whole list of items that the City accepts through its service by visiting www.Cornwall.ca/bulky.

But before you get rid of your lightly used chair or BBQ, why not consider donating it to a local non-profit? That way, you can ensure that your item stays out of the landfill.

What if you happen to have other items to get rid of that you know don’t go in the trash? I’m talking about old paint cans, fluorescent light bulbs, or even tires?

Well thankfully, you can get rid of all of these — and more — at the, you guessed it, Cornwall Landfill. You can dispose of your dead batteries, paint cans, E-Waste, flammable, toxic or corrosive materials at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot on select days for free! Visit www.Cornwall.ca/otherwaste for a full list of accepted materials.

You can even get rid of tires — yes even on rims — at the landfill for free! They are recycled into rubber mats that are used in children’s playgrounds around Ontario.
