How I see Altruism in this Community

The longer I live in Cornwall, the more I see how this small city shows altruism and a sense of care to others. It leverages individual strengths and fosters a strong community spirit which has the potential to attract enterprises, visitors and also engages residents in local events.

For instance, I attended a comprehensive workshop designed to educate parents on the potential risks associated with social media. The workshop which was organized by the Social Development Council and its partners focused on equipping parents with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of danger, particularly concerning human trafficking, internet child exploitation, and issues related to healthy relationships. Technology is a fundamental part of our daily lives, children and teenagers are increasingly exposed to the potential dangers in the digital world. The workshop helped parents gather information they need to navigate these challenges, encouraging a safe and supportive environment for their children. Each workshop session featured concurrent child care and youth activities in a designated room facilitated by BGC Cornwall/SDG Staff. These free workshops are made possible by the generosity of Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie (CSCE) and featured expert speakers from local services such as Victim Services of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne, and Maison Baldwin House.

On April 2nd, Cornwall City Hall hosted a flag-raising ceremony, in a unified celebration of World Autism Acceptance Day. This event, in partnership with Autism Canada, highlighted the importance of acceptance, inclusion, and the value of individuals on the autism spectrum in our community.

On April 8th the city hosted an Eclipse Party at Lamoureux Park, which had a fantastic backdrop with unobstructed sky views, DJ and delicious food available for purchase from local food trucks.

A notable first time event coming up is The Youth Engagement Fair which is being held on Wednesday April 10th at the Cornwall Civic Complex. This free event is to establish a platform that empowers and enriches the lives of young individuals by promoting participation in sports and recreational activities, while also encouraging community involvement and volunteerism. This event represents an opportunity for local clubs, sports teams, arts groups, nonprofits, and businesses to showcase what they offer to the youth. By promoting active participation and volunteerism, they aim to inspire leadership, celebrate diversity, and instill a sense of belonging and social responsibility among our youth. The Youth Engagement Fair is made possible by the City of Cornwall’s Building Safer Communities Fund awarded by Public Safety Canada.
