Devine Designs is a Cornwall-based small business specializing in headbands, bows, accessories, and moccasins for babies and children. Owner Ashley Devine opened her business 2.5 years ago and is enjoying growing her business part-time while maintaining her full-time employment.
How it started:
Ashley started her business during her second maternity leave, at the beginning of the pandemic.
“I was looking for something to do for myself and I was interested in girl’s accessories, so I decided to start making girls headbands and bows,” said Devine.
Devine came up with the idea for the moccasins when she had a son and realized how many more fun, cute accessories existed for girls than for boys.
“When I started my business making bows and headbands there was a lack in boy products. When I had my son, I found that there weren’t a whole lot of options. That’s what drove me to start making the moccasins, to try to gear it towards boy moms so they would have something cute to shop for.”
How it‘s going:
Since opening, Devine has taken part in approximately 30 to 40 markets in the area. She does seasonal product drops tailored to various seasons and holidays. Christmas is usually the most popular drop.
When it comes to making the products, sourcing quality Canadian materials is Devine’s main priority.
“I use organic bamboo fleece for the moccasins as well as real suede. I always try to keep the quality in mind when making moccasins – obviously I want to make a product that is going to last for your child,” Devine explained, “For the outside of the moccasins, I always try to buy from Canadian fabric sources if I can.”
In the future, Ashley hopes to build her business by potentially getting her products featured in stores and branching out to other markets.
