CORNWALL, Ontario – It was time to honour sacrifice and remember the importance of community at the Cornwall District Navy Veterans Association, on Sixth St. E., in Cornwall on Saturday. The organization, which supports our local naval veterans and their families, was gathering for Charter Night, the annual celebration of the association’s role in our community.
“Charter Night is the Cornwall District Navy Veterans annual night to remember who we are, what this service club is all about. We’re here to honor the naval veterans of Canada and make sure we don’t forget what they did for us in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War,” said Brian Windell, spokesperson for the evening. “We all get together the last week of January every year to celebrate, and that’s what we’re doing tonight…it’s been about 50 years.”
Attendees celebrated with food, dancing, and a special presentation of an operational naval flag, given to the organization from the HMCS Algonquin.
“We have an operation flag that was flown on one of our destroyers. It was given to the club and tonight we’re going to have a little demonstration,” said Windell.
The Cornwall District Navy Veterans Association supports naval veterans in our community through a variety of support programs, as well as through fostering and promoting community while honouring the sacrifices made by Canadian veterans.
