CORNWALL, Ontario – On Oct. 11, 26-year-old Emilie Maheu went missing after leaving her work in Alexandria. Tragically, she was found dead two days later. Her former boyfriend Brandon Smeltzer was charged with her murder. Now, family and friends are working to ensure that Maheu’s young daughter, Elizabeth, 2, has what she needs.

Donations for Elizabeth aims to raise money as well as a trailer full of goods for her.

“Our main drop off location is located at the Alexandria Gaetan chip stand where the trailer we were gracefully lent by Manon and Terry Sauve stands,” said Shelley Mousseau, a close friend of Maheu and an organizer of the fundraiser. “We have many other drop off locations including Vankleek Hill and Cornwall herbs and white rock hotel in Alexandria. Every location can be found on our Donations for Elizabeth page.”

Mousseau said her, and her group wanted to do what they could to come together as a community in support of Maheu, her daughter and their family.

“We are a very close knit community,” she said. “When one hurts, we all hurt! Especially during such a tragedy! We cannot grasp what the family is possibly going through but we have as a goal to alleviate as much stress for the family as we possibly can. If we can lift a little weight off of their shoulders, than us as a team and a community, we have done our job!”

Mousseau said that Maheu was her longtime friend and will always remember her dearly.

“Emilie and I met 22 years ago in kindergarten, and we’ve been close friends since,” said Mousseau. “She was just an all-around amazing daughter, sister, mother and, friend! No matter what obstacle came her way, she took it with stride and never once lost her smile. It was impossible not to love her!”
