CORNWALL, Ontario – Hang onto your hats, folks, because the geeks are taking over Lamoureux Park Saturday, Aug. 19 for the fourth annual CoTiCon.
In conjunction with Cornwall Food Fest and Beyond 21, the event is set to take place outdoors, with a variety of vendors, artists, multiple games and some great contests.
Event organizer and geek culture enthusiast, Annie DeRochie says that she was inspired to create an event that would fill a void within the community.
“When I started the event back in 2014, we didn’t have any conventions in the area,” said DeRochie. “I have been going to conventions since I was very young and am still to this day very passionate about them and cosplay.”
DeRochie says that the event has made huge strides since its inception, paying close attention to her main audience, and their requests.
“I realized that the gaming and anime community was far more popular at the event than other medias,” said DeRochie. All are still welcome but we now tend to cater mostly to these two to be more unique.”
Having grown in quality as well as size, DeRochie says she has seen some innovative costumes throughout the years.
“There are opportunities to merge many skills within the cosplay world. There’s basic crafting skills, faux/foam/plastic armor making, basic to complex sewing techniques, make up skills, wig and hairstyling and much more involved in the creation of just one costume sometimes,” said DeRochie.
“Not to mention the photographers and videographers who help bring the characters to life. There are a lot of skills within this geekdom world.”
We’ve also grown in size and quality of course, as many a successful event do as they continue to go on throughout the years.
This year’s CoTiCon Rendezvous aims to be the biggest one yet, with special guests, costume contests, and a picnic. For more information, check out their facebook page.
