2 people rushed to hospital after carbon monoxide detected

CORNWALL, Ontario – Two people, a Cornwall woman and her grandchild, were rushed to the hospital after carbon monoxide was detected in their Louisa Street apartment complex early Wednesday.

Cornwall firefighters were called to the five-plex around 9:15 a.m. after a guest of the grandmother reported feeling sick from a potential gas leak.

Three fire trucks and a total of 11 fire personnel attended the scene as well as two ambulances and EMS vehicles.

Platoon Chief Pierre Baril told Seaway News the unit, heated with natural gas, did have a carbon monoxide detector, but whether or not it actually went off, is part of the ongoing investigation.

“Some units did have carbon monoxide detectors, some did not,” said Baril. “If you are burning a fossil fuel, detectors are required. There were also several other building infractions.”

There have been no updates on the condition of the woman and her grandchild.

Baril said a second tenant and a guest, who discovered the colourless, odorless, poisonous gas, were also treated by paramedics at the scene.

He said the landlord was contacted about the incident, and is traveling to Cornwall to meet with officials.

More to come.
