CORNWALL, Ontario – Alexandria gets lit up in all its Christmas splendour this weekend.
The 10th annual Festival of Lights kicks off Saturday in Island Park.
The event, sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, includes more than 200,000 lights as well as displays created by local schools, agencies and service clubs, said volunteer Bonnie McDonald.
Several thousand people are expected to take in the event that runs for the entire month of December in the evening from 5 to 10 p.m.
“On opening night we usually get about 1,000 people,” said McDonald.
The free event will include a performance from Glengarry County’s own Kathleen Sauve at Alexandria Island Park. Sauve’s show will be preceded by a fireworks show at about 6:15 p.m.
Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a Christmas cookie decorating event, while Dec. 8 a Christmas memorial celebration takes place at 6:30 p.m. The closing ceremonies, which includes more fireworks, goes Dec. 31 at 6 p.m.
