DO NOT USE WATER: State of emergency declared following oil spill, fire in Newington

CORNWALL, Ontario – A state of emergency has been declared in Newington following a massive house fire and oil spill that now threatens the community’s drinking water.

South Stormont declared the state of emergency Tuesday afternoon, and residents have been advised not to drink water from the municipal supply.

The township is concerned because the oil spill occured close to Newington’s main well, and for the protection of about 100 homes there has been a “Precautionary Do Not Use Water Advisory” imposed under the guidance of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit.

The Township is delivering information door to door explaining that the water is safe for lavatory use, however should not be used for drinking or bathing. Bottled water is also being delivered door to door to ensure that their families have safe drinking water.

Sampling is being conducted by the Ministry of Environment and these results will assist in determining next steps. There have not been any adverse water samples to report at this time, however until confirmation is received, the “Precautionary Do Not Use Water Advisory” will remain in effect.

The Ministry of Environment will collaborate with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to determine when the order can be lifted and what the next steps will be. At this time, there are no indications as to timelines.

“Our thoughts are with the family who has lost their home and secondly, with the residents of Newington,” said South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft. “The Township is working with local agencies to ensure safe water is available for drinking and that the most efficient and economical methods are being used to have Township water restored as quickly as possible.

“We are declaring an emergency to ensure that should the township require provincial assistance and support, the required documentation and process has been followed.”
