Former Cornwall surgeon passes away

Toronto – Ontario: An orthopedic surgeon who served Cornwall for 25 years has just passed away.

Memorial service for Dr. Ramchandra (Ram) Achar was held at Elgin Mills Funeral Centre in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

He was 85 years old.

After leaving his native India, he came to Cornwall where he worked for 25 years.

His other colleague, the late Dr. Premand Nayak, also an orthopedic surgeon, died recently at the age of 80 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served Cornwall area from 1972 to 1980.

Dr. Achar retired in 1998 and took up a job with the Workplace Safety Insurance Board in Ottawa.

He later moved to Toronto in 2005 to be close to his children and grandchildren.

The surgeon finally retired in 2008.

He is survived by his wife Malathi, three children and five grandchildren.
