It’s all gravy (and curds): Rod’s Fry Shack wins Poutine Fest Run

CORNWALL, Ontario – Rod’s Fry Shack won over your taste buds during the Cornwall Lions Club’s first Poutine Fest Run, on Saturday.

Six chip trucks and one restaurant served samples of the iconic Canadian treat during the event.

“Your votes determine the city’s best poutine vendor,” said organizer Kibby Lutz.

Despite not being a fan of french fries swimming in gravy and smothered in cheese curds, he recognized poutine festivals in Ottawa and Montreal have attracted large crowds.

“It’s a very popular dish in Cornwall,” said Lutz. “One hundred tickets have already been sold.”

Anyone who presented a ticket could chow down at each participating business. Then completed ballots with votes for best poutine were dropped off at the Best Western Parkway Inn by 7:30 p.m.

“The vendors have given their time and product to make this a successful event,” he said.

Winner Rodney Elderbroom was pleased with the result.

“The underdog won,” he said with a smile after the results were tabulated.

All proceeds from the tasty new festival will go back into the community.

“We’ve discussed donating to Hospice Cornwall,” added Lutz, the service club’s secretary and 10-year member.
