Cornwall, Ontario – Over a thousand job seekers visited the Civic Complex on April 24th for the annual Cornwall and Area Job Fair. The substantial turnout reflects the desire of many to find work, especially amidst rising local EI claims, as reported in the April 24 edition of the Seaway News.
“There was a lineup out the door at 9:30 am, half an hour before opening, so there are eager job seekers,” remarked Justine Viray-Levac, Assistant Coordinator at the Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB). EOTB was highlighting some of their training opportunities at their booth. “We’re focused on providing substantial support for newcomers. We’re also excited to promote the Automotive program, which starts on July 2nd at St. Lawrence College,” Viray-Levac added.
The fair, featuring over 80 tables, showcased diverse sectors, including skill trades, hospitality, healthcare, and logistics.
Carilyne Hébert, Executive Director at the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area, noted the significant participation from local employers and service providers. “We’ve had a lot of participation with a strong presence from the skilled trades sector with our partnership with Skills Ontario. There is something here for everybody,” said Hébert.
The event also offered additional support for newcomers, offering language services such as translation to help new Canadians in attendance engage effectively with employers.
