CORNWALL, Ontario – The third annual Teddy Bear Picnic hosted by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) attracted over 150 visitors on Sunday, Aug. 12 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“It’s been a beautiful day, so it has been a great opportunity for families to bring their kids out and to spend a nice afternoon with the family,” said Matt Mulvihill, Communications Officers at St. Lawrence Power Development Visitors Centre. “It’s part of our summer program, so it’s a way that we are able to provide some fun, free events for families throughout the summer months.”

According to paramedics Sherril Lazare and Clint Col of the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance (AMA), some teddy bears suffered broken legs, arms and backs. One plush elephant even suffered a broken trunk.

“I’m glad that we were invited, it’s a lot of fun,” said Lazare, who is hoping to return next year.

“It’s different fixing up teddy bears though,” joked Col.

In addition to getting their teddy bears bandaged, attendees could explore a fire truck provided by the Cornwall Fire Department, learn about the jobs of firefighters and paramedics, partake in crafts and a scavenger hunt.

Snacks and beverages were provided.

“It’s one of the ways we’re able to put our name out there about the facility we have here, and also a way to give back to the community…,” said Mulvihill.

“We try to engage members of our local community, not just tours coming off the highway,” he added.
