CORNWALL, Ontario –  In late July, a cyclist sustained serious injuries after being involved in a collision with a motor vehicle on Second St. East.

Since the start of 2017, there have been six collisions on Second St. and seven on Pitt. St. involving a cyclists/scooter and a motor vehicle. These streets have the highest rate of accidents since the start of last year, with McConnel Ave. and Montreal Rd. pedalling close behind.

In total, 39 reported incidents between cyclists/scooters and motor vehicles have occurred in Cornwall since the start of 2017, with 28 reported last year and 11 reported so far this year.

“The Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) is continuing to monitor traffic-related concerns through the use of targeted enforcement,” said Cst. Matthew Dupuis, Traffic Unit officer. “By deploying traffic resources in known collision areas, we hope to reduce the number of collisions while encouraging drivers to slow down and focus on the roadway.”

Of the 39 involved, 11 have been transported to hospital with injuries, eight in 2017 and three to date in 2018.

“Public education for road users is an equally important tool and is something the CCPS provides through traffic campaigns and publications,” added Stephanie MacRae, CCPS Communications Coordinator. “It is important that everyone who uses the roadway, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, understands and follows the rules of the road.”
