MORE SEAWAY PROBLEMS: Ship runs aground near Hamilton Island
The Tundra

CORNWALL, Ontario – Another day, another headache for St. Lawrence Seaway officials.

This time a ship has run aground near Lancaster, according to posts on social media. The Tundra, a salt-water vessel, is “hard aground” near Hamilton Island, just east of Cornwall.

The ship went aground at around 1 a.m. Sunday, forcing the St. Lawrence Seaway to close for a time once again.

The seaway, only hours before, had reopened after a small cruise ship struck the Eisenhower Lock near Massena, closing the waterway for about two days.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is deploying a team of investigators to assess the situation. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.

It appears as though seaway traffic has since restarted – a online vessel tracker shows a number of ships underway up and down the system, as of 1:30 p.m.

The cruise ship Saint Laurent was refloated, with a giant gash in its bow, and is headed for Quebec City.
