CORNWALL, Ontario – The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences announced they received a grant for $22,000 from RBC Foundation on Tuesday, July 10. The grant for River Cleanup efforts will allow the River Institute to continue garbage and debris removal from the shoreline and river.

“We are thrilled to partner with the River Institute and the network of volunteers on this important program to improve and restore the river ecosystem,” said Dianne Nixon, local RBC Branch Manager in a River Institute press release.

The River Institute, the Upper St. Lawrence River Protection Network and Akwesasne are removing debris at three sites in Cornwall, Lancaster and Akwesasne. The next cleanup event will take place at Cornwall Harbour on Sunday, July 22 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Over the past two years, approximately 750 volunteers have helped to remove 20.5 tonnes of tires, shopping carts, mattresses, car parts, empty barrels, construction debris, plastics, glass and other litter from nine sites in the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall and Akwesasne,” said Karen Douglass Cooper, Outreach Coordinator and Project Lead for the Cleanup in a press release.

RBC has supported more than 770 global charity organizations that protect watersheds and promote access to clean drinking water since 2007.
