CORNWALL, Ontario – Hundreds of onlookers gathered around ‘Howard’ the pumpkin before his 150 ft. drop on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the parking lot of FreshCo.

The 950 lb pumpkin, hoisted by MacGregor Crane Service, was part of the third annual Pumpkin Drop in support of Rachel’s Kids

Supporters could purchase a ping pong ball that would be placed inside the pumpkin for $5. Almost 2000 ping pong balls were sold. After the pumpkin dropped, the ping pong ball to land the closest to the ‘X’ on the ground would win $1,000.

“It’s a fun event, it’s something different,” said Kim Lauzon, Executive Director of Rachel’s Kids. “It’s something around Halloween that gets the whole family out.”

All proceeds raised will go back to Rachel’s Kids House of Hope, whether it be towards upgrading equipment or funding Small Moments of Joy.

“We were looking for something to do around Halloween. We have our Smile Cookie and we have our Trunk Sale and we have our Garden Party, but we didn’t really have anything else that fell around Halloween. So we decided to do the pumpkin drop,” said Lauzon.

The ping pong ball that landed the closest to the ‘X’ was #943, belonging to Brandon Poirier.
