CORNWALL, Ontario – Grade 11 and 12 students of St. Joseph’s Secondary School hosted a spaghetti supper on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Blessed Sacrament Parish.
Community members could indulge in vegetarian or non-vegetarian spaghetti, salad and a variety of sweets for $10. Several silent auction items were also available to bid on.
All proceeds from the supper will support students through a mission trip to Guatemala in the new year.
“Our spaghetti supper and silent auction is to help raise funds for our students going to Guatemala,” explained school Chaplin, Gordie Vanputten. “They will be spending just about 10 days there in February doing a service trip. We will work on painting and building roads in one of the villages through the One By One program.”
Vanputten explained that the school has been hosting the program for the past 20 years.
“I think the trip is very important because we are going to be making impacts on small communities there who usually don’t have the same opportunities as us,” said Erica Joyce, a student who will be attending the trip. Joyce thinks that it is especially important for young individuals to experience a trip like this.
Andrea Uhr, another student who will travel to Guatemala, said that her and a few fellow students reached out to local businesses for silent auction donations during their free time on weekends. Some sponsors include Echo Trends, Fence Depot, Best Buy and more.
Some of the students are feeling nervous but excited for the trip and they are eager to make a difference.
