CORNWALL, Ontario – A woman, 65, has died following a two-vehicle collision at the corner of Cumberland and Water streets.

Cornwall police confirmed the woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital Tuesday night. Her name will not be released by police.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne confirmed Wednesday the deceased woman was a member of that community.

“The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne wishes to extends its deepest condolences to the family affected by a fatal car collision…involving MCA’s medical transport van,” read a statement from the tribe. “The tragedy has taken the life of an Akwesasne community member and others have been deeply impacted as well, including the drivers of both vehicles involved, and MCA staff.”

The accident, which occurred Tuesday at about 4:30 p.m. between a car and a van had forced police officers to close the intersection.

Cornwall police Sgt. Robert Archambault was not able to provide specific details as investigators are still probing the scene, but he indicated two other individuals had to be taken to hospital with injuries as a precaution.

Those injuries were deemed to be minor.

Archambault did not get into further details concerning their gender, nor the circumstances of the injuries.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Const. Matt Dupuis at 613-933-500, ext. 2755.

Witness Nicole Dubeau-Tessier said the force of the collision was incredible.

We were just leaving the park when the cars hit. The crash was loud and we knew it would be a bad one,” she said in a social media post on the Seaway News Facebook page.

In an interview later Dubeau-Tessier said the intersection can be dangerous.

I looked down and saw that it was at the intersection we cross everyday. There needs to be a light there,” she said.

The area of the intersection is seeing an increasing volume of traffic because of roaqd closures and detours at nearby Brookdale Avenue where the high-level Seaway International Bridge is being demolished.
