CORNWALL, Ontario – Find out how urban farming is making its home in the city with Smart Greens at ‘Science & Nature on Tap’ on Wednesday (September 9) at Schnitzels European Flavours.

The speaker series, hosted by the River Institute of Environmental Services, kicks off another season with a presentation by S.G. owner/operators Eric Bergeron and Eric Amyot at the downtown restaurant, starting at 7 p.m.

“Capable of producing over 1,000 plants for harvest each week, Smart Greens is on a social mission to prove that a business can be both profitable and socially responsible,” said Karen Douglass-Cooper, communications director for the River Institute.

In 2013, the two Erics got together looking for a way to get involved in a green technology company that could truly impact the local economy.

After a quick visit to Boston in early 2014 to meet with the innovative team at Freight Farms Inc., they placed an order for their first Smart Greens farm. The farm in a box arrived in July 2014 and the pair haven’t looked back. They are currently growing fresh basil, kale and spinach for the local marketplace.

“This indoor farm uses much less energy and water than a typical farm and produces the equivalent output of one acre of land each month,” said Amyot.

Bergeron adds, “These greens are hydroponically grown and have no pesticides, are GMO-free, are harvested fresh the same day that they are packaged and are grown locally all year round.”

Science & Nature on Tap presentations are free, however space is limited. For more information or to reserve a seat, call (613) 936-6620, email kcooper@riverinstitute.ca, or visit www.riverinstitute.ca.
