LONG SAULT, Ontario – An idea three years in the making for James Loucks and Stacey Holmes, the Community Market officially opened its doors to Long Sault residents this Saturday, Sept. 17. Offering a wide variety of local products and food items, the market also hopes to also satiate the community’s desire for natural and organic products.

The building itself previously served as a race car fabrication shop, and while the structure was well-suited for Loucks and Holmes’ vision, there was a great deal of work to be done before it could accommodate vendors. “It had also been used as a crafters market in the past, and all of the wood in the current structure was actually repurposed,” said Holmes.

Having begun putting their plan into action only three months ago, the Community Market has since been growing steadily with no plans of slowing down any time soon. “It’s a little scary at times,” said Loucks. “When something comes together as fast as this has, you always stop and wonder if you’re really ready.”

Initially, Loucks says that he and Holmes only had a few connections. “Other community members and local artisans got involved, and it just sort of snowballed from there,” he said. With everything from organic coffee to pet apparel, there’s truly something for everyone.

While Loucks and Holmes have successfully rounded up a slew of great local vendors, they say the journey doesn’t end here. “Moving forward, we plan to offer services like reiki, reflexology, massage, and whatever else we can bring in,” said Holmes. “We’re also hoping to host workshops out of our space…yoga, meditation, and possibly paint nights.”

“You’ve got all these people who are talented and capable who need a venue,” said Loucks. “We provide the venue, and we all get something out of it.”

The Community Market is open daily from 10-6. For more information, check out their Facebook page.
