Fire burns on Quebec island across from Summerstown

CORNWALL, Ontario – A fire burned across from Summerstown with witnesses suggesting part, or most, of a small island was ablaze Tuesday night.

The fire had brilliantly lit up the shoreline near Summerstown for a time, with witnesses congregating in the area to take in the scene.

Robert Lefebvre, who saw the flames, said the fire appeared to be burning on Chatelain Island, which is part of Quebec near St. Regis, but was later determined to be the much smaller Dickerson Island.

It was fairly big to start,” he said, adding about half a dozen cars were pulled over with people gazing across the river. “It was starting to die down.

That island is mostly marsh, no roads.”

It’s unclear what efforts were made to fight the fire, which was later left to burn out. The island is about a kilometre from the Ontario shore, but very close to St. Regis, Que.
