CORNWALL, Ontario – St. Lawrence College was once again the host for hundreds of local high school students on Tuesday, Feb. 26, with the return of the Eastern Ontario SKLZ Competition.
Students competed in a number of disciplines, allowing them to show off their talents to faculty and visitors. Programs running at St. Lawrence College included automotive and small engine, carpentry, cabinet making, dramatic arts, TV and video production, and an environmental program. St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School also hosted a baking and master chef competition at their own facility.
Students were awarded prizes at the end of the day, and the winners will advance in the competition, facing students from across eastern Ontario.
“It’s always a really busy day, but things ran fairly smoothly,” said Laurie Marquette-Brown, who has been organizing the event for several years.
According to Marquette-Brown, participation was down around 100 students this year, with the absence of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario at the competition. Previous years have included over 200 students competing from both the Upper Canada District School Board, CDSBEO, and L’Heritage Secondary School.
