CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s recently opened Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) school celebrated the first graduation of their Level 1 students on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018.
UCMAS is designed to promote creative thinking and visualization through use of tools like the abacus. The first batch of students started in May and around two dozen kids were at the graduation ceremony this past Saturday.
“The focus of the program is to deploy both sides of the brain,” said Vijay Vajeethan of UCMAS.
As a special guest for the kids, Vajeethan invited Nimalraj Thavarajah, a scientist and Canadian Forces member to show the kids the value of what the program is trying to teach.
There are 6,000 UCMAS centres around the world in 80 countires. In Canada, there are nine centres in QC, 88 in Toronto and one in Cornwall.
