CORNWALL, Ontario – The Ontario government announced on Friday, Feb. 2 that the Walmart in Cornwall will be one of 87 new stores in the provice to sell beer and cider.

“The rollout of beer and cider in grocery stores has increased convenience for consumers and expanded opportunities for grocers, breweries and cideries to grow their businesses and create more jobs,” said Ontario’s Finance Minister Charles Sousa.

Ontario ultimately plans to make beer available at 450 private businesses, 300 of which will also sell wine.

These 87 new stores join 200 stores that already sell beer and cider, including the Fresh Co. in Cornwall.

The Walmart in Cornwall will start selling beer in April.

“Ontario maintains a strong commitment to social responsibility,” the government statement reads. “By law, grocers selling beer, cider or wine must have designated sales areas and standard hours of sale, abide by limitations on package size and alcohol content, and meet staffing and social responsibility training requirements.”
