Police lay attempted murder charge in Bill’s Sports Bar stabbing

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Community Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Division has made an arrest in relation to the stabbing which occurred on June 6, 2018 at Bill’s Sports Bar.

Gyasi Burke, 36, of Chateauguay, Quebec was arrested on Sept. 5, 2018 and charged with the following:

  • Attempt to commit murder
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Threats
  • Breach of undertaking (for possessing a weapon and failing to keep the peace)
  • Breach of probation (for failing to keep the peace)

It is alleged during the early morning hours on June 6, 2018, the man became belligerent with a woman at the bar and subsequently assaulted her. It is further alleged an altercation took place outside of the bar, at which time he stabbed a 31-year-old man multiple times with a knife. It is alleged the man then made hand gestures at patrons, imitating the shooting of a gun, before fleeing the area. Police were contacted and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Sept. 5, 2018, a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service assumed custody of the man from a detention centre in Montreal, as they had the man in custody on the strength of Cornwall’s warrant. The warrant was executed and the man was held for a bail hearing.
