EASTERN ONTARIO – The South Nation Conservation (SNC) Authority has issued a flood warning on Friday, June 14 for regions along the St. Lawrence River, including upstream of Iroquois throughout Edwardsburg/Cardinal and Augusta Township.
“Lake Ontario’s water levels may rise slightly in the coming days as a result of rainfall and high inflows from Lake Erie,” read an SNC press release. “Levels are expected to resume declining slowly thereafter as high outflows from Lake Ontario continue…Lake Ontario’s increased outflows may increase St. Lawrence River levels…residents are advised that wind may cause large waves, further aggravating water levels, which may affect structures close to shore.”
The warning was issued due to forecasts predicting a rainfall accumulation of 15 to 25 mm on Saturday, June 15. The flood statement will be in effect until Friday, June 21. Residents are advised to stay away from unstable banks and watercourses where flows are high. Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas are historically susceptible to flooding and are encouraged to monitor conditions.
“Lake Ontario’s water levels have reached the record peaks observed in 2017 as of two weeks ago and have since slightly dropped and stabilized,” read the press release. “Levels are already at critical values in some areas. Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper St. Lawrence River during periods of active weather.”
