Speedway banquet celebrates a banner year

CORNWALL, Ontario – Before racing into a new season, Cornwall Motor Speedway took a moment to look in the rear-view and honour its track champions of 2014.

The annual banquet held on Saturday (March 21) at the South Stormont Community Hall also paid tribute to Brian Mulligan’s 51-year career in motorsports. He was presented with the Mitch Jock Memorial Award of Merit. Mulligan has been the voice of racing for generations of fans in Cornwall since 1982.

After an epic battle with Stephane Lafrance throughout the season, Carey Terrance won the Jiffy Auto Service Modified Championship trophy.

As a consolation prize, Lafrance won the Canadian Nationals Championship, while Chris Raabe captured the Doiron Engineering Cup Heat Championship.

Other modified drivers honoured were Brian McDonald and Laurent Ladouceur in the point’s title, while McDonald also received an award for placing third in the Doiron Cup. Mario Clair finished third in the Canadian Nationals.

In the Alexandria Home Hardware Pro Stock division, Dave Bissonnette won a third title over Jocelyn Roy, Stephane Lebrun, Rock Aubin and C-D Beauchamp. Stephane Lemire won the Mohawk Race Parts Series in front of Lebrun and Roy. Bissonnette also won the heat championship sponsored by RSI Industrial Supply in front of Lebrun and Roy.

Corey Wheeler was crowned in the Tracy Wheeler/Royal Lepage Sportsman division winning his first title in front of Shane Pecore, Joey Ladouceur, Ryan Stabler, Louis Jackson, and Justin Lalancette. Mathieu Desjardins won his second Lussier/Seaway Sportsman Series over Pecore and Dany Gagné.

In the Laminacorr Semi-Pro division, Junior Delormier won his title with Chris James capturing the Mini-Stock championship. The Baxtrom Your Independent Grocers Rookie of the Year award winners were also celebrated with Charlie Rice in the Modified, Ryan Stabler in the Sportsman, Terry Ladouceur in Pro-Stock, and J-F Pagé in the Mini-Stock being named.

The Ron Morin Award was offered to Louie Jackson for all his contribution in the sport. His son Louie Jackson Jr. continues the legacy in the Sportsman division.

Speedway officials noted some key highlights for 2015: a new major sponsor in Bandit Motorsports, the upcoming season with 21 shows, the return of the World of Outlaws Late Models, the Big Blocks, a three-race Sportsman Series, and a new bonus program that currently has more than $11,500 in prizes, money, and contingencies.
