CORNWALL, Ontario – It’s the little golf tournament that means a whole heck of a lot to stroke victims, their families and awareness surrounding heart disease.
The local Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Stroke for Stroke Golf Tournament takes place June 17 at Summerheights Golf Links.
The event typically raises about $7,000 a year, and garners interest from up to 100 golfers.
Cindy Rowe, area manager for the local Heart and Stroke office, said the event is great way to shine a spotlight on diseases that can often fly under the radar.
“(The money raised) is very important. It helps us do the work we do,” she said. “We truly appreciate our volunteers that organize this event.”
The tournament normally takes place in August, but Rowe said organizers moved things up to June to take advantage of Stroke Month and create more awareness.
Stroke for Stroke is popular among golfers, who are treated to a myriad of so-called “event holes” that teach them about the dangers of heart disease and stroke.
Rowe said more of the same can be expected this year, with a few surprises along the way.
